Target, Walmart and Amazon Shopping Events Signal Back-to-School Sales Creep

Amazon’s competition just got a little bigger. Retail giants Target and Walmart hope to cash in on the yearly sales frenzy of Amazon Prime Day by holding their own retail events on the same days.

Ray Wimer, Professor of retail practice at the Whitman School

, professor of retail practice at 鶹ƵUniversity’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management, predicts these summer sales events could lead to great deals for the consumer, and push up the back-to-school shopping season. Wimer says:

“This is not really shocking as Target, Walmart and others have launched their own sale days around Prime Day before – it happened last October and in July 2018 and 2019. It will continue and others will join in the sales event.

“I believe Amazon is trying to highlight their third-party sellers this year as well. I don’t believe it will impact Amazon much and should lead to some great deals for the consumer.

“I think the bigger question is that Prime Day in mid-July kicked off the back-to-school shopping season back in 2018 and 2019. Does the move to June signal that back-to-school creep will now be before July 4th? In some ways, it is how the holiday shopping season has crept to before Halloween.”
