In the lives of 鶹ƵUniversity Trustee Patricia H. ’64, G’66 and Louis A. ’61, G’62 Mautino, patriotism runs deep. Louis was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps while a student at 鶹ƵUniversity in the late 1950s, and Patricia comes from a family deeply devoted to service to our nation—her uncles served in the U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps.
Now, with a gift to the recently announced campaign, the couple will help student veterans pursue their educational goals and reach their fullest potential. The Mautinos have pledged $750,000 to the campaign, including $250,000 to establish the Louis A. and Patricia H. Mautino Veteran Scholarship; the scholarship will provide financial assistance to undergraduate veteran students enrolled at 鶹ƵUniversity. The remaining $500,000 will support four scholarships the Mautinos have previously established.
“We are strong believers in what the University is doing for veterans—in Chancellor Syverud’s vision and in Vice Chancellor Haynie’s leadership on the local and national levels,” Patricia Mautino says. They are also strong believers in the power of giving a “hand up” to students to help them achieve their goals.
“Pat and Lou have long been deeply committed to our university and to our nation’s veterans,” says Chancellor Kent Syverud. “We are grateful for this gift and for all they have done through the years to support our students and ensure that they have the resources they need to be successful.”
Patricia Mautino is retired from a long and distinguished career in education, where she saw firsthand the difference that scholarships and support can make to students. She graduated from 鶹ƵUniversity in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish education from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education, and in 1966 with a master’s degree in library science from the School of Information Studies.
She spent five years as a librarian at Onondaga Community College before joining the Oswego County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), where she stayed for 25 years, leaving as executive program director in 1996. For the next 10 years, Mautino worked as assistant superintendent and administrative consultant for the Central Square Central School District. She continues to give back to the local community through a number of professional and volunteer associations in library and information services. In addition to serving on the University’s Board of Trustees, she is a member of the School of Information Studies Board of Advisors.
Louis Mautino attended 鶹ƵUniversity on a football scholarship and was a member of the 1959 national championship football team. He graduated from the University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education, and he earned a master’s degree in science education at the School of Education in 1962. Mautino started a career as an assistant football coach at 鶹ƵUniversity and played semi-professional football with the Mohawk Valley Falcons. He then began investing in real estate and built his own business. He retired after 35 years as a successful builder and commercial and residential real estate developer.

Michael Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation, Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship and executive director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. “Their support will make a true difference in the lives of our student veterans.”
In addition to supporting the campaign as a donor, Patricia Mautino is one of three chairs of the Forever Orange campaign. A member of the Board of Trustees since 2014, she is currently vice chair and previously served as chair of the board’s Advancement and External Affairs Committee, which she says has prepared her well for this role as a campaign ambassador. “We are on a trajectory to excellence,” she says. “This campaign will drive us to be a world leader in areas that matter.”
