Juan Tavares
The Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience welcomes Juan Tavares as the new director of the Lillian and Emanuel Slutzker Center for International Services. Tavares is currently the director of international affairs and services at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Tavares has worked in higher education for 25 years, with more than half that time centered on supporting international students. Before joining Southwest Minnesota State University, Tavares was the director of international admissions and services at Western Michigan University. He has also held positions at Northwestern University, Michigan State University and Kalamazoo College.
“Throughout his career, Juan has been a strong advocate and support for international students and scholars in their pursuit of higher education in the United States. He brings a great depth of knowledge and understanding of immigration issues and student development, as well as a proven track record of building relationships with constituencies on campus and abroad, all to enrich the international student and scholar experience. We are thrilled to welcome him to 鶹Ƶin the coming weeks,” says Rob Hradsky, senior associate vice president of the student experience.
Bringing his deep experience in student services, health and wellness, recruitment and global programs management, Tavares is excited to join 鶹ƵUniversity and enhance the work happening within the international community and beyond.
“In working in student services and in my experiences traveling to nearly 60 countries, I have gained incredible appreciation for cultural diversity and the vibrancy of a global community. I am thrilled to join Syracuse’s diverse, global campus community and to work with students, scholars, visitors, staff and faculty to promote a welcoming, supportive environment that advances the growth and success of our students and scholars,” says Tavares.
Tavares earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University, where he was also a student-athlete on the swim team. He joins the University on July 8.
