Television writer and legend Steven Bochco passed away Sunday at the age of 74. Known for his cop dramas like ‘Hill Street Blues’ and ‘L.A. Law,’ the writer was memorialized in a Washington Post article, which quoted Newhouse Professor and pop culture expert Robert Thompson, who discussed Bochco’s legacy on the industry.

“There is no ‘Sopranos’ without ‘Hill Street Blues,’ ” he said. “Matt Weiner (‘Mad Men’) and Vince Gilligan (‘Breaking Bad’) and David Chase (‘The Sopranos’) and all these people ought to wake up every morning and send a note to ‘Hill Street Blues.’ ”
