In the new digital age, selfies have become an integral part of the lives of many. Researchers at the Newhouse School aimed to answer as to just why so many people are taking these photos in their daily lives. Makana Chock, Associate Professor of Communications, led the study and was also interviewed by Voice of America to discuss the results.

Chock mentioned “peer pressure” as one motive, and also noted that many young adults feel that if photos weren’t taken, the event really didn’t take place. “Liking” has also evolved, formerly from a verbal comment to now a double tap.
