Newhouse School’s ‘Sports Matters’ Symposium Will Examine Current Issues in Sports Media

Sports Matters 2017 logoThe will host Sports Matters, a daylong symposium examining current issues in sports media, on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. Follow on Twitter at #SportsMatters.

, professor of practice in broadcast and digital journalism and director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center, will open the event at 9 a.m. Newhouse Dean will offer welcoming remarks.

The event will include three panel discussions:

9:15 a.m.: “Sports as News/How do we prepare for when sports rises to the level of news?”

Panelists:

  • Jason Dumas ’11 – sports director, WHAG-TV, Hagerstown, Md.
  • Patti Kleinman-Fallick ’78 – senior director, broadcast operations, U.S. Tennis Association
  • Erika Wachter ’12 – sports reporter, Fox 5 New York/former field hockey player, 鶹ƵUniversity
  • John Wildhack ’80 – director of athletics, 鶹ƵUniversity/former ESPN executive
  • Simon Perez, assistant professor of broadcast and digital journalism at the Newhouse School, will moderate.

1 p.m.: “Taking a Knee—Then What?/How media cover and follow up on societal issues in sports”

Panelists:

  • Ahmed Fareed ’02 – sports anchor, Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
  • Dale Hansen – sports director, WFAA-TV Dallas-Ft. Worth
  • Karl Ravech – host, ESPN
  • William C. Rhoden – retired columnist, The New York Times
  • Claire Smith – coordinating editor, Universal News Group, ESPN/first female recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for baseball journalism
  • Joel Kaplan, associate dean for professional graduate studies at the Newhouse School, will moderate.

3 p.m.: “Sports Reporting and Social Media: The good, the bad and the ugly/How do we use social media in our sports reporting? How should we?”

Panelists:

  • Cary Chow – host/anchor/reporter, ESPN and ESPN.com
  • Kimberley A. Martin G’06 – New York Jets beat writer, Newsday
  • Dave McMenamin ’05 – Cleveland Cavaliers beat writer, ESPN.com
  • Sarina Morales ’08 – morning host, “SportsCenter,” ESPN
  • Anne Osborne, associate professor of communications at the Newhouse School, will moderate.
