Newhouse Students Document Lives of 鶹ƵResidents as Part of Fall Workshop

Seventy graduate, undergraduate and military visual journalism students from the in the will spend Oct. 13-16 documenting the lives of 鶹Ƶresidents as part of the school’s annual Fall Workshop.

The students will use photography, recorded sound, video and writing to tell stories of people in the surrounding community. Their work will be published online at in the weeks following the workshop, but live updates will be posted throughout the weekend.

“The Fall Workshop is often cited by students as one of the best educational opportunities they had during their time in Syracuse,” says Bruce Strong, MPD chair and director of the workshop. “We are grateful to all the professional coaches who give freely of their time to help our students grow, and to the community members who open their doors to our students.”

“Home base” for the workshop will be Newhouse 3, where 25 professional photojournalists, video producers, graphic designers, photo editors and other visual communicators from across the country will provide advice and guidance as coaches.

An opening event on Thursday, Oct. 13, will feature a talk by Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial and commercial photographer Deanne Fitzmaurice at 7 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium, Newhouse 3. The weekend will conclude with a public community screening on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. in the same location.

Deanne Fitzmaurice

As a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial and commercial photographer, San Francisco-based Fitzmaurice is most known for her unique ability to go behind the scenes to discover and convey personal, intimate and emotional stories through images. Fitzmaurice, a Nikon Ambassador, is an assignment photographer with publications including Sports Illustrated, ESPN, National Geographic and many other respected outlets. Fitzmaurice has also partnered with foundations and nonprofits including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Lucille Packard Foundation. Her commercial clients include Apple, Nike, Google, Facebook, Netflix, Mazda, Target, Avon, Microsoft and Coca-Cola. In 2011, Fitzmaurice’s documentary work was a finalist for the Alexia Foundation Grant for World Peace.
