Point of Contact Gallery is hosting an opening reception for “Last,” an exhibition by local artist Dorene Quinn, on Thursday, Sept. 4. The opening reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Free parking is available the night of the reception in the 鶹ƵUniversity lot on the corner of West and West Fayette streets.

In the exhibition, Quinn uses visual forms and diverse materials to create memorials to nature that speak of our relationship to the earth. The dual meaning of the word “last” is the genesis of her current body of work, engaging with humanity in an act of counting down, last one of species, last fateful decades of rising temperatures, last chance to contain the damage, perhaps the last of generations on a world that is familiar and sustaining. The artificiality and imperfection of the works reflect the futility in acting too late to repair or preserve. By working in fragile environments, Quinn calls attention to her experience and presence in hopes that these places can remain. “Last” will be on view from Aug. 19 to Oct. 8. The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday from noon-5 p.m. or by appointment.
Quinn was born in Portland, Ore., and has a bachelor of fine arts degree in printmaking and painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art and a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from the New York State College of Art and Design at Alfred University. She maintains an active studio space in Syracuse, exhibiting solo and groups shows in several galleries and museums. She has been honored with fellowships, grants and awards from her work, including a NYFA Mark Fellowship and an NYSCA grant. Quinn currently teaches sculpture at 鶹ƵUniversity and founded a non-for-profit educational program for inner-city teens to gain access to college art and design programs.
