Lark Eshleman, a noted child and adolescent psychotherapist, will lead a two-day seminar on “Enhancing Attachments: Parent and Professional Skill-Building for Healthier Children and Families” Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Goldstein Student Center, located on 鶹ƵUniversity’s South Campus.
The seminar is tailored for parents, social workers, counselors, psychologists, therapists and other helping professionals, and is sponsored by It’s All 鶹Ƶ Childhood & Family Inc., Jowonio School, The David B. Falk College of Sport & Human Dynamics and its Department of Marriage and Family Therapy, and Families with Children from China of Central New York.
The seminar will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day. Friday’s session will be geared toward professionals, with discussions on current brain-based research on attachment and trauma; matching practice and neurological understandings; resistant behaviors and how to work therapeutically for best results; and practical ways for parenting and therapy to complement each other.
Saturday’s session is geared toward parents, with discussions about attachment insecurity and attachment disorder; hands-on approaches to parenting; and working with mental health, school and other professionals to become a healthy team.
Eshleman is an expert in working with children who have experienced early emotional trauma, attachment difficulties, neglect and abuse. She is the founder of the Institute for Children and Families (ICF) and currently serves on the board of directors of the international Association for the Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children (ATTACh).
She is trained and highly practiced in the practices of Theraplay®, EMDR, Neurofeedback, Attachment and Narrative Therapy, Trauma Art Narrative Therapy (TANT), family and individual psychotherapy and school psychology for children with significant trauma and attachment issues.
Eshleman’s publications include “Healing Emotional Trauma: Treating the Wounded Child” (Third Edition, 2009), a community-based response program for children who have been affected by war and organized violence, and “Becoming a Family: Promoting Healthy Attachments With Your Adopted Child” (Taylor Publishing, 2003).
The cost is for professionals is $65 per day or $110 for both days, and continuing education credits are available. The cost for parents is $45 per session or $80 for both days. The cost for students (with I.D.) is $20 per day or $35 for both days. Lunch each day is on your own.
