Whitman School of Management Professor Raja Velu has been named to the newly created post of JPMorgan Chase Faculty Fellow.

In this important new role, Velu will serve as liaison and facilitator between JPMorgan Chase and Â鶹ƵµÀUniversity, helping to foster deeper understanding between the two institutions and facilitating collaborative research. He will work closely with colleagues at both JPMC and SU, hosting networking events and seminars, as well as generating new research ideas and leading his own research projects.

Velu joined the Whitman School in 1998. He served as chair of Whitman’s Management Information and Decision Sciences Department for three years, and has held a visiting faculty position at Stanford University since 2005. He is also affiliated with the Indian School of Business. Velu worked in the Intelligent Information Systems Group at IBM-Almaden Lab, where he conducted cutting-edge research on data mining, and has led a forecasting team at Yahoo!  in the sponsored search area. His work with Microsoft Research in Silicon Valley has been widely reported in the technology media. In addition, Velu has consulted for such leading companies as Saks Fifth Avenue and Time, Inc.

Velu’s research interests include data mining, multivariate methods, longitudinal and time series modeling, and exploratory data analysis. He is currently working in applied areas, such as algorithmic trading, analysis of high frequency data in finance, and econometrics of auctions. In addition to a research monograph published by Springer Publishing, he has published in Biometrika and the Journal of Econometrics, among many other journals. His research is highly cited in social and natural science fields.

Velu holds a Ph.D from University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MStat from the Indian Statistical Institute, and a bachelor’s degree in statistics from Madras University.
