College of Human Ecology, CNYAMFT to host sex therapy conference

The conference, “Can’t Get No Satisfaction, An Integrative Couples Approach to Sex Therapy,” will be held Friday, April 29, in the Goldstein Student Center at 鶹ƵUniversity from 9 a.m. –4:30 p.m., featuring presenter, David Olsen, Ph.D., LCSW, LMFT, author, educator, minister and clinician. The conference is sponsored by the ’s Department of Marriage and Family Therapy in collaboration with the Central New York Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CNYAMFT) and the Samaritan Counseling Center of the Mohawk Valley Inc.
Pre-registration for the conference is required, with early registration strongly recommended. Registration costs $65 for the public and $60 for marriage and family therapists if postmarked by April 21. Registration for walk-ins will be $75, and $20 for students in a mental health-related discipline.
The conference will help therapists understand the most prevalent sexual dysfunctions, the history of sex therapy and how the field has changed over time. The conference will also help in building an integrative, multi-system approach to providing sex therapy to a variety of couples. Special attention will be given to interactional and object relations approaches to sex therapy, while looking in depth at the application of an integrative approach.
Olsen is an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy-approved supervisor, clinician and human services administrator who teaches both sex therapy and couples therapy at Sage Graduate School. He is the author of “Integrative Family Therapy” (Fortress Press, 1993), the “Couple’s Survival Workbook” (New Harbinger Publications , 2001) and “The Spiritual Work of Marriage” (Routledge, 2008) and executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center of the Capital Region.
Participants will leave with a solid understanding of the major paradigms of sex therapy, an understanding of values and culture, and a method of application of sex therapy techniques to a wide variety of populations.
