University College upgrades English Language Institute facilities

University College hosted an open house on Friday, Sept. 10, to showcase the newly remodeled (ELI) work and classroom spaces. Significant structural changes were made in order to accommodate the increasing number of international students enrolled in the ELI. Amenities include seven smart classrooms, three smart computer labs, a student lounge, meeting areas, a professional library and an ELI reception area.

eliSmart classrooms have ceiling-mounted projection units and teaching stations, which contain a computer, DVD/CD/VHS deck, sound equalizer and mobile document camera. Smart computer labs contain the same equipment, as well as printers and student workstations running the full Microsoft Office Suite and access to the Internet.

鶹ƵUniversity sponsors the ELI to provide intensive English language instruction to international students and visiting professionals at all levels of proficiency. The ELI provides intensive study of the language for those who must improve their English for academic or professional reasons. There are more than 175 students enrolled in the fall 2010 semester.

“The ELI works closely with admissions, in particular with Karen Bass, who is responsible for undergraduate international recruitment. The 100 percent increase from fall 2009 to fall 2010 is impressive and has the ELI at near capacity for its classroom facilities from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.,” says associate dean Geraldine de Berly, director of ELI. De Berly said that enrollments are likely to continue at this level for the next year, however, much is dependent upon the University’s international enrollment strategy. “This year the ELI has experienced a significant growth in students from China (PRC). This trend is one that intensive English programs across the country are experiencing. If enrollment increases again, then additional classrooms and instructors will be needed.”

The ELI prepares participants to use English as quickly and effectively as possible. Instruction is offered in English grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation. Films, lectures, area trips and special events are part of the program and are designed to help students learn English on an accelerated basis.
