Daylong Symposium at Newhouse Exploring ‘Sports Matters’ Feb. 25

The is hosting a daylong symposium examining current issues in sports and sports media on Wednesday, Feb. 25. “Sports Matters,” which will include a series of three panel discussions, will be held 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. The event will open with welcoming remarks from Newhouse Dean Lorraine Branham, followed by the first panel, “Ethics in Sports Media: Is It OK to Lie?” Panelists include:

  • Lynne Adrine (veteran producer/director, ABC News and director, Newhouse’s program);
  • Marcus Hayes (sports columnist, Philadelphia Daily News);
  • Scott Pioli G’05 (assistant general manager, Atlanta Falcons); and
  • Shalise Manza Young ’99 (New England Patriots beat writer, the Boston Globe).
  • Joel Kaplan, Newhouse associate dean for professional graduate studies, will moderate.

Beginning at 1:15 p.m., the second panel will address “Covering Domestic Violence Issues: Have Sports Media Done Enough?” Panelists include:

  • Jon Frankel ’86 (correspondent, HBO Real Sports);
  • Don McPherson (activist and sportscaster);
  • Keri Potts ’98, G’99 (senior director of PR, ESPN);
  • CJ Silas ’90 (host, ESPN Radio San Luis Obispo and author, “No Girls Allowed: The Jock and Jill Mentality of Sports Broadcasting”).
  • Anne Osborne, associate professor of communications at the Newhouse School, will moderate.

At 3 p.m., the third panel will explore “Sports Content and Message: Who Controls Them and How?” Panelists include:

  • Kevin Cooper ’01 (director of communications, Houston Texans);
  • John Garcia Jr. G’10 (regional recruiting analyst, FOX Sports/Scout.com);
  • Joe Giansante (executive senior associate athletics director/chief communications officer/external affairs, 鶹ƵUniversity Athletics);
  • Phillip Hochberg ’61 (sports media lawyer); and
  • Kimberley A. Martin G’06 (New York Jets beat writer, Newsday).
  • Jason Benetti ’05, ESPN play-by-play announcer and Newhouse adjunct, will moderate.

A question-and-answer session will follow the panel presentations.

The event will conclude with a reception in the Food.com area on the second floor of Newhouse 3.
