Joyce DiCamillo
Renowned pianist and educator will be the featured guest at 鶹ƵUniversity’s Jazz Day on Saturday, April 1.
DiCamillo will offer a jazz master class at 9 a.m. and perform with the University’s Morton Schiff Jazz Ensemble and jazz faculty at 10:30 a.m. Presented by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Jazz Day events will be held in Shemin Auditorium, Shaffer Art Building, and are free and open to the public.
DiCamillo has led her own jazz trio for more than 30 years. As a pianist, she has performed with such jazz greats as James Moody, Phil Woods, Houston Person, Nick Brignola, Marvin Stamm, Urbie Green, Arnie Lawrence, Steve Marcus, Gerry Neiwood, Bob Mintzer, Butch Miles, Andy Fusco, Martin Drew and Marlene verPlanck. Her trio has released five trio CDs receiving national airplay: “A Touch of Jazz,” “Freelancin’” (featuring Person), “Moment to Moment,” “Love Letters” and “Sunrise Lady.”
DiCamillo performs on the Steinway piano and is included on the prestigious international roster of Steinway Artists. She has performed repeat engagements at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., hosted by the late Billy Taylor. Her trio has headlined at such venues as Southport (U.K.) Jazz Festival, Guinness Jazz Festival (Cork, Ireland), Andria (Italy) Jazz Festival, 鶹ƵJazz Fest, the Jazz Cruise and Litchfield Jazz Festival. She appeared on the acclaimed National Public Radio’s “Piano Jazz” hosted by Marian McPartland and has toured as pianist for internationally known pop vocalist Donna Summer, appearing with her in Mexico, Chile and throughout the United States. DiCamillo is one of the artists interviewed on the A-F-of-M video, “How to Get the Gigs that Pay the Big Bucks,” and has appeared as a panelist at the Kennedy Center discussing the music business.
A graduate of the Setnor School of Music, DiCamillo holds a degree in music theory/composition with honors in piano; she studied with concert pianist Frederick Marvin, a disciple of Claudio Arrau. A longtime classical piano instructor and jazz coach, DiCamillo was a longtime member of IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) and is a co-founder (with John Mastroianni) and faculty member of Summer Jazz Workshop, which will celebrate its 25th season as the longest running summer jazz program in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area. In 2014 she stepped down after 24 years as executive director (and director of jazz studies) for Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic to launch , a not-for-profit organization for Stamford, Connecticut’s inner-city children. She is currently board chair.
