DeArbea Walker, a junior from Houston, is one of 12 students from across the country to be named to the (SJI) Class of 2017.

SJI is a nine-week training and internship program for college students interested in sports journalism careers. The institute is designed to attract talented students to journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and editing, and to enhance racial and gender diversity in sports departments nationwide.
The students will be in residence at the University of Missouri School of Journalism from May 26 to June 3, followed by an eight-week paid internship in sports media. Walker will intern with MLB.com.
“I’m excited for this new journey,” Walker says. “With the shift in demographics and ethnic groups in our country, it is important that our media reflect the swift change in our population. Hopefully I can carry the skills I learn at the institute into my career long after my time at MLB.com.”
Walker is a dual major in at the and at the . She is co-founder and editor in chief of Student Section Sports and works for the WAER sports department. She has interned at PaperCity Magazine and the 鶹ƵUniversity Department of Athletics, and has held positions with CitrusTV and The Daily Orange. She is studying abroad in London this semester.
